Recording Tips for Guitarists
Change guitar strings the day before coming into the studio and bring extra sets of everything, picks, strings etc..
Check the intonation of your guitar! Slight intonation variance won't be detected by the
late night bar crowd, but the studio is unforgiving regarding intonation. If your out of tune you'll know it instantly when listening to the playback... Find a good tech to strobe tune your axe or learn to do it yourself! Don't waste time and money tuning up at the studio!
Bring in your own rig. If you are a guitarist and want to capture the sound you get from the daisy chain of your guitar, pedals, and amp then be sure to bring your entire setup in. Experimenting with studio instruments, amps, and pedals is fine if you're not set on what you want for a sound, but put a time limit on it. Let the engineer and producer, who are much more familiar with their own gear, assist you in finding the sound you are looking for.
Watch The Fuzz - If you typically play with lots of distortion, try backing off a bit. Too much
distortion gets messy and looses clarity. Experiment with your master volume and preamp and make sure you are
getting enough signal to the tape.
- Don't be high or wasted ...
